I’m doing my usual thing when I’m considering purchasing something new…my research! And my kind of research usually takes place online being a digital marketer and all. I can be a little skeptical when reading reviews and tend to take other people’s opinions about products with a pinch of salt.
Here the criteria in my search for a DSLR:
1. It needs to be a Canon – I already have a canon lens which I love. It’s a 1.8 Canon 50mm. Bokehlicious as Kai from DigitalRevTV would say!
2. It needs to be good at video. I’m quite into video and use it for work though it isn’t part of my main offerings. I fancy a STM lens to go along with it because the autofocus is less juddering than lenses which are specifically designed for taking photos.
3. I am an amateur photographer and amateur videographer so need a simple to use DSLR.
4. I am on a budget!
5. I already have a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens so need a Canon. I realise that DSLRs within my modest budget will make this a cropped sensor, so perhaps suitable for head and shoulders shots but probably not great for closer shots like, say, headshots – see this example of what I mean.
The Canon 700D seems like it’s good value for money and ticks the above boxes and would allow me to purchase a lens with it. It is in no way a toy and will take fantastic photos and video in HD. My research continues. I don’t currently have a camera – I sold my old 550D because of the frustrating autofocus, audio issues (auto levels couldn’t be switched off without Magic Lantern) and I knew that a better upgrade would be coming along soon.
But…I have really, really, really missed having a DSLR. Taking photos on my smartphone just isn’t good isn’t though it is handy and convenient. I’ve missed some potentially great shots from not having a DSLR with me. But I’ve only ever used a fixed lens 50mm (obviously that value is higher on the cropped sensor 550D or 700D). The 700D also has touch screen and you can swivel it. Ooooh I’m getting excited just thinking about it! I will be going for an all-round zoom lens this time though maybe the STM 28-135mm…I really can’t wait and it’s something I can justify for work too as it will make me some more money!
